PUSHKIN STREET

In 1899 when century of A. S. Pushkin's birthday was celebrated, one of
the major streets of new city at the request of its inhabitants was
called by the name of the Great Russian poet. Earlier it was the Camp
prospectus - a path, which was directed from Konstantinov square (now
Amir Temur square) aside summer camps of Turkistan armies. The radial
prospectus began directly from picturesque square planted with trees
aside mountains. The first building on the right side (where it is a
complex of hotel " Uzbekistan " now days) - Volgsko-Kamsk commercial
bank, one of five largest banks operated in old Turkestan.

Along Pushkin Street since 1902, the line of the horse railway (horse
tramway), and since 1913 - a tram was laid. The line was single-track
with characteristic sidings at stops.

One of the most remembered buildings of street - the most
characteristic sample fashionable in the beginning of XX century
modernist style - Pushkin drugstore of firm Kaplan. Now there is a bank
in strongly reconstructed building.

Other place of attraction of Tashkent people in Pushkin Street is -
so-called "new telegraph". It was constructed specially for post-cable
office in 1911 and functioned up to the end of XX century.

Closer by the end of street (now on this place there is an overpass) in
a vista, between two lines of high poplars, many-domed building of a
cathedral of Sergiy Radonejskiy could be seen very well. Erected in
1897, the cathedral remained up to middle of 30th years of XX century.

Now the Pushkin street is stretched up to Salar aryk and comes to an
end by Pushkin square where there is a monument of the great Russian
poet.
